3 and a half cheeseburger review for the Galveston Cruise Port

Verdict: Friendly and affordable, but the port logistics need to get their little paws together.

The Best Parts of Galveston Cruise Port

Galveston, Texas — you were warm, friendly, breezy, and just inconvenient enough to make me side-eye my tiny travel itinerary.

First things first: the people of Galveston were lovely. Warm, welcoming, and friendly in that “come on in, sugar” kind of way. I appreciate hospitality, especially when I am a cheeseburger cat waddling around looking for snacks and mild drama.

The beach itself was not exactly postcard-perfect, but honestly? The ocean breeze was doing its job. Sometimes you do not need crystal-clear water and luxury resort energy. Sometimes you just need salty air, a seawall, and somewhere to dramatically stare into the distance like you are the main character of a cruise commercial.

The hotel situation at the Hilton Spark was actually a win. It was affordable, right by the sea wall, and close to everything — restaurants, Walmart, and whatever else a traveling cheeseburger may need in a pre-cruise panic. Snacks? Close. Forgotten sunscreen? Close. Random emotional support Diet Coke? Also close.

Now let’s talk transportation, because this is where Galveston made me put down my margarita.

The Worst Parts of Galveston Cruise Port

The closest airports are in Houston, which means you are looking at about a 45-minute to one-hour drive to the Galveston cruise port. That is already a bit of a production. But then you get to the rental car situation, and suddenly the cheese starts sliding off the burger.

There was only one rental car brand at the port, and if you are dropping the car off there instead of at the airport, you get hit with an extra $100 fee. Rude. Unnecessary. Personally offensive to my vacation budget.

And there is no viable shuttle from the rental car location to the cruise terminal, which feels like a major miss. If you do not rent a car, you are basically choosing between a shuttle service or rideshare. Compared to Port Canaveral, where there are multiple rental car options, more competitive pricing, and shuttles from rental car drop-offs to the docks, Galveston felt much less accessible.

As for food, we tried Cajun Greek for dinner. I would not say the food changed my life, although my dad would like it noted for the official record that he strongly disagrees and loved his crab. So there is some family controversy here. Please respect our privacy during this difficult time.

What we can all agree on? The key lime pie was elite. Like, possibly one of the best my mom has ever had. The service was also great, which always earns extra points from me because I am tiny, demanding, and emotionally dependent on good hospitality.

Overall, Galveston had friendly people, affordable lodging, convenient nearby essentials, and a nice ocean breeze. But the transportation setup? A little too chaotic, even for me.
