5 cheeseburger review for Roatán, Honduras Diving

Final verdict: Close to the ship, easy to get to, affordable, beautifully run, and absolutely stunning. Roatán gets five cheeseburgers from me.

*** Before I start telling you how majestic and mysterious I looked underwater, I do need to confess something: I was not actually on this 2022 dive trip. This was a past adventure taken by my sister and her husband while they were sailing on the Carnival Elation for a 14-day Panama Canal cruise. Since I was not physically there to cause problems in person, I was photoshopped into the photos using AI so I could properly insert myself into family history, as one does.

Roatan, Honduras as a Port

Roatán, Honduras, diving excursion was one of those cruise stops where everything just worked. No dramatic travel ordeal. No three-hour bus ride. No “why are we still walking?” moment. The dive excursion was right off the coast, and after getting off the ship, we took about a 20-minute bus ride to the dive shop.

From there, we hopped on the boat, and the ride to the dive site was freakishly quick.

Like, suspiciously quick.

One minute we were on land, and the next minute we were floating over one of the most beautiful dive sites in the world wondering why every vacation cannot be this easy.

The excursion was a certified two-tank dive through Anthony’s Key, and from start to finish, it was the kind of experience that makes you understand why Roatán is such a bucket-list spot for divers. The water was clear, the reef was stunning, and the whole thing felt wildly accessible for something that looked like it belonged in a nature documentary.

And then came the underwater magic.

The dive guides were clearly super experienced and knew exactly where everything was hiding in the water. That made the whole experience even better, because instead of just floating around hoping the ocean felt generous, we were actually guided toward the good stuff. We saw eels, crabs, stingrays, turtles, and all kinds of dreamy ocean things that make people immediately start saying stuff like, “I need to get certified,” even though they panic in hotel pools.

And one of those crabs? Enormous. Like, so big it looked less like a crab and more like an ancient relic that had been guarding the reef since the dawn of time. Respectfully, I would not fight him.

We could also hear dolphins in the distance, which is exactly the kind of dramatic background soundtrack I would request if I were producing my own travel show.

But the real showstopper?

Sea horses.

Not just cute. Not just interesting. Absolutely mesmerizing- but that's the beenfit in diving in a protected marine park.

My grandpa has been diving for over 30 years and had never seen a sea horse in the wild. So seeing one on this dive was one of those rare travel moments that feels almost unreal. Tiny, delicate, strange, and magical — basically the underwater version of me, except with better posture and fewer burger toppings.

The dive staff were also fantastic. Helpful, organized, and friendly without making the experience feel rushed or overly complicated. There were great snacks and drinks on the dive boat, which I personally believe should be required on all excursions. Hydration? Important. Snacks? Essential. Tiny post-dive treats? A human right.

The people on the dive were great too. One person even brought an underwater housing unit for their camera and shared photos afterward, which is the kind of vacation stranger everyone deserves to meet. A generous photo person is a cruise blessing.

Overall, this dive checked every box. It was close to the ship, affordable, easy to access, beautifully run, and completely stunning. For a certified diver looking for an excursion that does not require a stressful all-day journey, this one was a major win.

Roatán gave us crystal-clear water, reef drama, dolphins in the distance, turtles, stingrays, eels, giant ancient relic crabs, sea horses, snacks, and zero unnecessary chaos.

Honestly? Rude of me to have missed it in real life.
